“Doris Gazda has done a masterful job of developing a contemporary compilation of challenging and musically rewarding exercises and pieces designed for the middle school or high school string orchestra.”
“This edition goes well beyond the concept of the standard warm-up volume that so many of us have used in the past. Of particular interest to me is the inclusion of appropriate literature at the end of each section which serve as an amplification of the concepts presented.”
“. . . this text has the potential to enhance and complement any school string curriculum.”
Peter Boyce, from Pennsylvania Music Education Association News, Spring, 2001.

Fiddling Fingers:

Beginning Fiddling Lessons for String Classes or Individual Learners Janet Farrar-Royce & Doris Gazda with Jay Ungar and Molly Mason (Carl Fischer) This is a beginning method for introducing fiddle tunes and techniques such as shuffles, slides, drones and tags. This comprehensive beginning book can be used with any level class.

Spotlight on Strings-Level 1

...Is a first year method designed for a heterogeneous group setting as well as individual instruction. Co-authors Doris Gazda and Albert Stoutamire have designed a unique approach which teaches students to play with all four fingers on all four strings from the very beginning. The logical sequence of technical exercises and program music offers young string players a comprehensive and positive approach throughout the first year of study. The method offers suggestions for improvisation and writing music throughout.

Spotlight on Strings-Level 2

...Is a second year string method designed for a heterogeneous group setting as well as individual instruction. Co-authored by Doris Gazda and Albert Stoutamire, level 2 continues the essential development of major and minor finger patterns on all four strings. The logical sequence of technical exercises and program music also offers string players a comprehensive and positive approach throughout their second year. A fingering pattern for each new key makes it easy for students to understand the patterns of fingering on each string when playing in that key.

Melodous Etudes

Selected from the Vocalises of Marco Bordogni (Carl Fischer)
Arranged and edited by Doris Gazda
Each of these volumes has over 50 etudes in a beautiful legato style that will expand the lyric bowing technique on each of the instruments.
The etudes are carefully edited with bowings and suggested tempo indications.

NEW! Studies in Lyricism

These beautiful legato studies have been carefully chosen from the vocalises of Concone, Marchesi and Panofka and are organized in a progressive order for advancing students. A variety of keys have been selected starting with the easiest ones for string instruments to the more difficult. Also, the rhythmic values in the studies progress in order from the simplest to the more complex.
Sonority and richness of tone are key elements to mastering these studies. Development of a beautiful tone is dependent on both expert bowing technique and a good vibrato. Legato bowing and use of the entire bow are essential to development of the sense of musical line and expression. String players constantly strive to improve these techniques just as a vocalists work on them through the breath and phrasing. For this reason some of the best etudes for the study of lyricism are taken from time tested vocalises.
